More than 80 percent of the students come from poor families , said Carrie Peterson , executive director of Summerbridge Louisville
One reason the program is so successful , Peterson
said , is that the average class has six to eight students.
''Where else would they get that much attention in the classroom?'' she
A number of the 23 teachers are high school or college students , so they bring youthful enthusiasm to the classroom , she
said.Lessons are often hands-on , and teachers use enjoyable examples to catch the attention of their pupils.One lit a light bulb using a lemon.Another jerked a tablecloth from under a set of dishes , leaving all of them in place.
''They're having fun , but we're serious about their academics , '' Peterson
Haianh Nguyen of Chicago is one of several teachers from out of town who teach at Summerbridge.They stay in dormitories at Presbyterian Theological Seminary
and make little money , but say they love it.
''I find my happiness here , '' she
said. ''We get a lot out of it.''.
The program began June 18 and will end Saturday.
