Carmen DePoalo, business agent for Local 301, said that while the increase was not technically part of the contract negotiations, the union made it clear helping retirees was important.
"That was one of the key issues going into the negotiations," he
said."Obviously, it's something that we felt strongly about."DePoalo
would have liked to have had cost-of-living increases, but the good news is that retirees will get more in their pockets now, with the possibility of more added down the line.
