Carlos Vainer is co-author of From the Valleys to Global Forums: Learning for Action in Rural Movements in Brazil
Economist and sociologist, Carlos Vainer is Doctor on Social and Economic Development - Université de Paris I, Panthéon/Sorbonne. Professor at the Institute of Urban and Regional Planning and Research at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IPPUR/UFRJ). Three times IPPUR´s Director, he has been Executive Secretary and President of the Brazilian National Association of Graduate Schools and Research on Urban and Regional Planning (ANPUR). He chairs the Laboratory State, Labor, Territory and Nature (ETTERN), where he develops researches and advises students´ researches on regional and urban policies, migrations, social and environmental impacts of large dams, large urban projects, urban conflicts, and social movements in the context of globalization. ETTERN also provides technical and educational support to social movements, particularly the National Movement of People Affected by Dams and urban movements fighting forced evictions.
He followed as researcher and as MAB's adviser the World Commission on Dams process, and integrated the Dams and Development Forum / United Nations Environment Currently developing researches on the process of internationalization of grass roots movements and the challenges of building new forms of internationalism based on social movements in the peripheral countries.
