STATEN ISLAND, NY - After working with her own line of custom-made clothing for almost five years, Carla Murino still has the hint of some anxious nerves before each one of her fashion shows.Her tally of runway-like presentations has reached well into the hundreds: Ranging from smaller-scale presentations at local clubs and lounges to the larger venues of the Manhattan hotspot, World, and popular clubs on the showy Las Vegas strip.Her swimsuits have drawn the attention of photographers from the New York Daily News and Stuff Magazine and her lingerie has been highlighted on the pages of Playboy.Ms. Murino, who opted for the work experience of managing her mother's boutique right after high school, describes being around fashion for her "entire life."After working at the trendy shop for several years, the young designer used her creative resources working as a stylist at department store photo shoots and as a window dresser.And from these experiences, Carla Murino was lead stylist/costume designer for the 2002 Scores Showroom Calendar and designed and produced her very own swimwear calendar, C-Girl Swimwear 2002, featuring her own creations.But Ms. Murino's focus remains not on the attention from press and fashion critics, but on how her customers feel about her clothes instead.
"It was almost an accident the way this all started," the young designer explains."I was just tired of never being able to find a suit that fit, so I decided to do something about it."
So when department stores failed to carry the exact fit for her body type, Carla Murino started making bathing suits for herself.Now, almost five years later, Ms. Murino is making bathing suits, cover-ups, evening gowns and closets full of ready-to-wear clothing for a flock of clients devoted to her custom-made line.
"I don't let the 'in designer' or critics dictate what I feel like designing for the season.""I get inspired from fabrics and then I design the cut around the feeling I get from the specific fabric."When it comes down to it, the fit is what is most important," Ms. Murino says."I want the girl wearing my clothes to feel confident with what they have on.That's why I concentrate on different body types and custom-made separates."Ms. Murino's bathing suits besides sexy are realistic.So there are bottoms that are made to fit the hips of real women, not only those pictured on the pages of Vogue.
And the pieces are sold separately so that you don't have to be a size 6 everywhere to make it work.A problem that is all too common to many of her customers, Ms. Murino says.
"They come back for the same fit in a different fabric every year," Ms. Murino said."I work with several different patterns, constantly adding new fabrics into the mix," she said.Each fabric, as well as photos of the designs available are highlighted on the designer's website at year Carla adds to her staples of patterns new, innovative styles.But the designer doesn't stop at bathing suits.She provides everything from swimwear and cover-ups to eveningwear, active wear and lingerie.
