We met our tour guides, Carl Fowler and Jan Brink at the airport.
Carl Fowler, our chief guide and VP of Rail Travel Center, advised us that we could take a no-additional cost cog rail trip (each of us had a Swiss 1st class rail/bus pass) to Arosa, a pretty town high in the mountains.
In the William Tell myth (William Tell was not a historically verified person, according to Carl), it was an Austrian nobleman, who forced Tell to shoot the apple off his son's head as punishment for not doffing his hat to said nobleman.

Carl Fowler
Mr. Fowler has spent most of his professional life selling rail tours and travel, beginning in 1982 in Washington State and since 1987 in Vermont. His firm, Rail Travel Center (with offices in Putney) has won Amtrak's "Golden Spike" award for outstanding sales eight times. He has extensive experience in marketing passenger train service and in coordinating tours on Amtrak. His extensive knowledge of Amtrak stems from his personal use as a frequent rider and from organizing group tours, selling travel to individuals, and getting feedback from his customers.
He has worked extensively with VIA Rail Canada and testified before the Canadian House of Commons' Transportation Committee on VIA service and the tour industry. He served for over 15 years on our Association's board of directors including five years on its Executive Committee. He is on the Vermont Rail Advisory Council, the state-appointed group which advises the Vermont Agency of Transportation on managing Vermont's rail assets, including its two Amtrak state-supported routes. He authored the 1995 proposal which served as the model for the present St. Albans-Washington Vermonter service. In the 1990s, he was on Amtrak's Travel Industry Computer Advisory Committee. His selling and travel experience includes extensive use of foreign rail systems, giving him as well a good perspective on the true potential for passenger train development.
