Carl A. Dahlquist is credited with elevating the art and craft of pressure sensitive tapes to a science. Dahlquist is best known for his work at 3M to determine the modulus value of a material necessary for it to be deformable enough and tacky enough to be considered as a pressure sensitive adhesive, known as the Dahlquist criteria.
Dahlquist graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in chemical engineering and joined the Central Research Department of 3M in 1943. His principal fields of interest during his 36-year career at 3M were adhesion, the rheology of adhesive materials and the investigation of the role of mechanical properties of polymers in tack, peel adhesion and vibration damping. He officially retired from 3M in 1979 as a corporate scientist, 3M's highest technical position, although he continued on a part-time consulting basis for an additional 20 years, expanding his interests into biomaterials and biological adhesion during that time. He published over 20 technical papers and was named as an author on at least 9 U.S. patents issued to 3M.
