AKWESASNE, NY -- Carey Terrance of Akwesasne scored his second feature win of the season at Mohawk International Raceway (MIR) on Friday night by capturing the Frenchie's Chevrolet Memorial Cup 35 for the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds.
Going into the Memorial Cup 35, the Twin Leaf Gas and Tobacco 66x of Carey Terrance
was clearly an early favorite -- Terrance
had scored four top five finishes (including one win) in the four feature races run at MIR
so far this season and he
was the defending winner of the event.
had to work hard for this win, darting past race leader Todd Stone (Middlebury, VT) in lapped traffic on lap 21 and holding off Stone's late race challenges to capture the win.
moved from his sixth place starting spot into third coming out of turn two and immediately set to work on Tarbell for the runner-up spot.
Tarbell and Terrance
traded the second spot several times in the early laps, but Terrance
powered ahead to take command of second on lap six.
On the restart, Stone stretched out a modest lead with Terrance
trailing by a few car lengths, while Gage Morin (St. Andrews West, ONT) slipped to the low side to grab third spot from Tarbell.
The caution waved just seconds later for the stopped car of Melvin Rush, tightening up the field for a restart, but as the green flag waved, Terrance
took off and Stone could not mount a challenge for the lead.
The final 14 laps ran without a caution and while Terrance
also had to contend with lapped traffic in the final few laps, he
cruised on for his
second win of the 2010 season.
The win puts Terrance
in the early point lead for the three-race Frenchie's Chevrolet American Revolution mini-series.
