The fluke action along the south ...
www.onthewater.com, 28 July 2011 [cached]
The fluke action along the south shore remains excellent. Capt. Ron said it’s been hot slightly east of the Charlestown Breachway. He reported that customer Ronnie King landed a 9.9-pound beauty from 40 feet of water near there on Wednesday morning. Ron suggested using a white bucktail below a white teaser, both tipped with squid and spearing, during the last three hours of the outgoing tide.
...
No weight was necessary the next morning and another 5 keepers came over the rail, mostly in the 20-pound class. The last two hours of the ebb tide have been best as of late. Ron also noted that there is a school of small bluefish in the Breachway rip.
Fluke action remains outstanding along Rhode Island’s south shore beaches. Robin at Quonny Bait and Tackle said it’s the best fluke bite in terms of numbers that she’s seen in four years while owning the shop. She reported about kayaker Will Kauffman, who landed 7 keeper fluke from 22 inches and bigger off Matunuck this past weekend. He was fishing in 20 feet of water with a Smiling Bill jig tipped with a mummy/squid combination. Shore anglers are scoring a lot of shorts from the beach, but Robin said you have a better chance at a keeper fluke in Quonny pond. Boat anglers are still doing very well in 40 to 60 feet of water off Misquamicut, but be prepared to weed through a stack of shorts to find keepers. In other fluke news, angler Ray Jones weighed-in 6.1- and 5.6-pound specimens at Breachway Bait and Tackle on Wednesday. He was fishing 30 feet of water off East Beach with a bucktail and squid strip during the outgoing tide.
...
Dave and clients fooled some of them using large Deceiver patterns. And during his shop’s weekly Monday night fish-in, the group visited Charlestown Breachway and hit some schoolies feeding on sand eels inside the pond during the top of the incoming tide. Captain Ron from Breachway Bait and Tackle had stellar week of striper fishing so far on a few reefs along the south shore. From Green Hill and Five Cottages Reef, he’s taken four bass over 40-pounds on live eels drifted in 30 feet of water with ½-ounce egg sinkers. The end of the incoming tide has been the most productive during his trips.
...
Striped bass aren’t the only species going off in Rhode Island right now; fluke fishing has been pretty good too. Captain Ron heard of some nice reports coming from the south side of the Nebraska Shoal can, as well as 30 feet of water west of the Charlestown Breachway. He suggested trying a Thom Cat glow-rig with a squid strip on the incoming tide. Robin at Quonny Bait and Tackle echoed the good fluke action, but added that there is a lot of weeding out going on to find keepers. However, plenty of 22- to 23-inch fish are coming from the Misquamicut area in 30 to 35 feet of water. Robin prefers the outgoing tide right now and suggested drifting from the Merry-Go-Round to the orange swimming boundaries.
...
Not surprisingly, boaters are consistently catching larger bass. Captain Billy Silvia of Can’t Imagine Sport Fishing Charters and his brother landed 20 bass ranging from 20 to 51-pounds on Wednesday morning off Sakonnet Point. They were chunking fresh-cut bunker during an early-morning ebb tide. Captain Ron at Breachway Bait and Tackle and his clients had a stellar morning on Green Hill Reef on Wednesday morning too. They boated several stripers from 20 to 48 pounds while live-lining shad and drifting dead bunker during an incoming tide.
...
Fluke-wise, Captain Ron from Breachway Bait and Tackle shared some really positive news during our phone conversation. He fished Wednesday morning in 30-feet of water off of Green Hill and caught 40 fluke up to 7 pounds. Ron mentioned that he fared much better during the outgoing tide. Dogfish have been a nuisance lately for some anglers and Ron encountered some in 60 feet of water, but none in shallow. His preferred fluke setup is a double bucktail rig with a 1/4-ounce jig on top and a 2- to 4-ounce jig on bottom, depending on the situation. Both of his bucktails are usually tipped with a squid and spearing combination.
