VETERAN performer Bunny ...

VETERAN performer Bunny Gibson of Neutral Bay has long been raising the flag for Australia even if it means getting up on a chair to reach the flagpole.Gibson is the longest serving ambassador for Australia Day.For the past 18 years she has travelled all over NSW to attend Australian Day celebrations and present citizenship certificates. Not bad, she says, for a former Pom who came out to Australia as a singer and dancer when she was only 18.Gibson, wife of the late actor John Meillon, has performed on television, and in films and musical theatre and is often best remembered for her role as Rita the Eta Eater in a television commercial.

...
One year, during official ceremonies at rural Narrandera, Gibson had to walk through an honour guard of local scouts."I could see the flag pole at the end and knew I was too short to reach the rope," Gibson said."I quietly asked one of the boy scouts to get me a chair and off he went and got the chair. "The scout proudly stood beside me while I got up on the chair and raised the flag."His mother insisted on getting a photograph. She said she'd show it to her son in years to come and say that was what Australia was all about doing the right thing."Gibson was to be the official guest of the Tamworth Regional Council on Australia Day."The mayor rang me last week just to check if there was anything I couldn't eat I told him tomatoes," Gibson said.
