Bryce Shabazz IOWABGCA | Youth Of The Year
...Bryce Shabazz, a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa (BGCCI), has been named the Youth of the Year for the state of Iowa by BGCA.Shabazz
, a senior at East High School
, was in and out of trouble throughout his
youth and not a regular member of the local Club.Alarmed by the direction her
son was going, his
mother arranged a surprise tour of Meyer's Hall (Polk County's Youth Detention Center) for him.The visit made the desired impact and shortly thereafter, Shabazz
started attending the Logan Clubhouse of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa
was placed in BGCCI's
Junior Staff program. The program allowed Shabazz to earn some income and develop employment skills while still participating and leading other Club programs and events.
As some Club members studied the political process, Shabazz
aided staff in taking a group of Club members to observe the Obama/Oprah political rally.CNN spotted the Club group and chose to interview Shabazz
experience. Shabazz plans to attend Des Moines Area Community College after graduation and transfer to Drake University Law School, where he is particularly interested in studying Business and Tax Law.
