The Health Panel was handpicked by Dr. Bryan Slinker who is a Task Force and Zoo Board member, and who has made his opinion public in a Seattle Times op-ed that the elephants should stay at the zoo and that they do not have foot problems, despite the fact that the zoo's own medical records document chronic foot problems.
At the June 26th Task Force meeting, Dr. Slinker attempted to explain away the 112 highly invasive artificial insemination procedures on Chai (documented by The Seattle Times) by saying it was really "only" 20 times because that's how many times she cycled. (1:34:22 at the June 26th meeting.) Dr. Slinker's role in the Task Force is a flagrant conflict of interest.
Task Force members are able to "reach out to ad hoc expertise," to complement the Expert Review Panel, as Mr. Slinker indicated in the April meeting.
Dr. Slinker, a Task Force and Zoo Board member handpicked the Health Review panelists most of whom are beholden the zoo industry. Dr. Slinker co-authored an op-ed in The Seattle Times in which he expressed that the elephants should stay at the zoo and astonishingly claimed that the Zoo's elephants do not have foot problems.
Dr. Slinker who is on the Zoo Board and admitted never having worked with elephants chose the panelists. In a flagrant conflict of interest, Dr. Slinker co-authored an op-ed in The Seattle Times parroting the Woodland Park Zoo's language that the elephants should stay at the zoo and made the astonishing and incorrect claim that our elephants don't have foot problems. If Mr. Slinker bothered to read the elephants' medical records he would have found out they do in fact have foot problems-dating back to at least 1999.
In a convenient and a strategic move, the zoo gave Slinker the job of convening five "outside scientific and medical experts. And what a great job Slinker did-for the zoo.
