Bryan Lebeau
An author who made his debut in our premiere issue last summer returns again- this time with a wonderfully-researched article on counterfeit death warrants from the Salem witch trials. In "The Carey Document- On The Trail of a Salem Death Warrant," professor Bryan LeBeau ( pursues a labyrinth of fraud and chicanery in the early part of this century. His story provides us with more than a few caveats when dealing with so-called "historical" documents.
Author LeBeau, chairman of the history department at Creighton University, is at work completing a new book "The Story of the Salem Witch Trials," to be published later this year by Prentice Hall. He has authored and edited four books and more than 50 articles on the history of religion in early America. He also currently serves as director of Creighton University's Center for the Study of Religion and Society.

"The image we have of the Pilgrims is a caricature," says Bryan LeBeau, an American studies professor at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. "I think elementary school textbooks, the media, children's films all painted a picture."
"They were a pretty serious group," says LeBeau, who hosts a weekly radio program, Talking History .
"They were a small sect; they never became a very large group. They did demand a strong allegiance to a code of rules. They were a democratic people committed to religious freedom … but that religious freedom was their own religious freedom," he says.

"The irony this year, of course, is that there will be limits placed on what we do," said Bryan LeBeau, a history professor and dean at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
And so, millions are getting ready to observe the holiday as always, with patriotic parades and concerts, dramatic readings of the Declaration of Independence, backyard barbecues and fireworks - and extra security. Many will pay tribute to the more than 3,000 people killed Sept. 11.
Yet while about a third of the public thinks a terrorist attack is "very likely" in the coming months, only 13 percent believe one will happen on the Fourth of July, polls show.
