~Remarks Centered on Benefits of Disaster Mitigation~
The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) announced FDEM Director Bryan W. Koon will testify tomorrow before members of the United States Congress during a hearing of the Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management subcommittee.
Director Koon, who also serves as vice-president of the National Emergency Management Association (NEMA), will testify on behalf of the organization to present the emergency management community's perspective on how disaster mitigation reduces the impact of a disaster. Director Koon will also address some of the mitigation efforts that the state of Florida has enacted - particularly in the areas affected by changes to the National Flood Insurance Policy (NFIP).
"We can never completely eliminate the hazards posed by events such as hurricanes and flooding," said Koon. "Proper mitigation strategies prepare communities for these types of disasters and have proven to reduce the financial damage caused by them."
