Renowned physicist Professor Bruce McKellar has also been recognised with an AC. He is an honorary professorial fellow at the University of Melbourne and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Particle Physics at the Terascale.
He is an internationally recognised physicist and an accomplished administrator and facilitator of research policy development and international collaborations.
He joined the University of Melbourne as the Professor of Theoretical Physics where he published his definitive study on nucleon forces, famously known as "Tuscon-Melbourne" force. Later he branched out into quantum physics and is also known for the "McKellar Wilkens" phase, a seminal quantum physics theory. His work has applications in photography, atmospherics physics and geophysics, and implications for pure mathematics.
His achievements include being an instrumental member of the first Australian Research Council, Foreign Secretary of the Australian Academy of Science and contributed to the United Nations Conference on sustainable development.
University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis congratulated Professors Berkovic and McKellar on their recognition.

Professor Bruce McKellar receives Australia's highest honour
CoEPP congratulates Professor McKellar for receiving Australia's highest honour-the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC)-in this year's Australia Day Honours. He received it for "eminent service to science, particularly the study of theoretical physics, as an academic, educator and researcher, through seminal contributions to scientific development organisations, and as an author and mentor."
Professor McKellar is an internationally recognised theoretical particle physicist who is famous for the "He-McKellar-Wilkens" phase, a seminal quantum physics theory. His work has applications in photography, atmospherics physics and geophysics, and implications for pure mathematics. His many other achievements include being an instrumental member of the first Australian Research Council, Foreign Secretary of the Australian Academy of Science and contributed to the United Nations Conference on sustainable development. Later this year, he is set to become the first Australian and first southern hemisphere president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).

IOP fellow Prof. Bruce McKellar has been made a Companion (AC) in the General Division of the Order of Australia, which is the country's highest civilian honour. The announcement was made in the Australia Day Honours on 26 January.

Prof. McKellar, who was awarded the Harrie Massey Medal by the IOP and the Australian Institute of Physics in 2006, is an honorary professorial fellow of the University of Melbourne and is due to become president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics later this year.
