Bruce Maurer , associate director for OSU's Department of Recreational Sports , said several Big 10 schools , including the University of Michigan , visited the campus with their architects to learn more about the expanded Fred Beekman Park
From those visits , Maurer
discovered good resource people and firmed up its vision for the project.
We spent four days visiting different parks in Ohio , and by the time we hired the Edsall , we could share our vision and they could share from their backgrounds and experience in what made a good park , he
said. When we finally sat down at the table , we could compare real-life examples of other colleges and universities and we dealt with everything in the third person , so egos didn't get in the way.
The park has won numerous awards , he
said , including the Ohio Sports Turf Manager's Association Facility of the Year honor.
The park has become the picnic capital of OSU.
In addition , from a growth standpoint , we had 71 , 198 visitors our first year , 287 , 229 visitors in 1999-2000 and 430 , 506 this year , Maurer
Community and campus approach
When you look at other colleges and universities throughout the country , there is not another facility of this type , Mauer said.
