Both Sarowitz and Bruce Hershenson, president of, agreed the market's strength is evident in other arenas, too.
This strength has exploded over the past 10 years.
Hershenson agreed, saying the number one change in the last decade has been eBay.Today, he estimates 90 percent of movie poster sales occur online.
Another major change is what collectors are seeking.Demand for posters from the 1920s, '30s and '40s has been replaced by demand for posters 1950s ,'60s and '70s.
"1960s posters are showing the biggest price rise," said Hershenson.
According to Hershenson, people want the movies they remember. For example, while a Marilyn Monroe poster may have been all the rage 10 years ago, some of today's collectors may not have even seen a Monroe film.
According to Hershenson, 90 percent of posters are affordable with some pieces priced as low as $5 to $50.However, he added that a collector should not expect to pick up an example of The Wizard of Oz or Casablanca for that price.
According to Hershenson, the most difficult reprints to distinguish are those of modern posters. For example, an early poster for the upcoming film Spider-Man was recalled because it pictured the World Trader Center towers. However, it is difficult to know whether examples on today's market were printed before or after the recall.
Hershenson recommended buying from reputable dealers and doing some research about posters.Several Web sites are available for this kind of research, including and, he said.
As for the future of the movie poster market, experts admit its difficult to glimpse into a crystal ball. All they can hope for is a continuation of the upward trend.
