Bruce Hecht attended the same program as Tom, only in person - or rather in his physical body.
An electrical engineer at the Boston-based Analog Devices and a robotics enthusiast, Bruce was thrilled to have a co-participant attending via a telepresence robot. Although he wasn't seated at the same table initially, he made a beeline for Tom as soon as he saw him. "When I heard where he was, I wanted to meet him because I wanted to see what the experience was like but also because I just like to sit with people at different tables and meet as many people as I can. Bruce took every opportunity to talk to Tom during breaks, at lunch and in small-group projects.
Bruce is a regular participant in MIT Sloan Executive Education programs. Building relationships with his co-learners is an important aspect of the program experience for him, and that is not something easily done with traditional audio or videoconference tools. "That wouldn't really be possible on the phone. With so many people, you won't even know what to ask, and you won't know whom to ask," he says.
You can see people at the table eye to eye," says Bruce.

Bruce Hecht is one of TEDxBeaconStreet's Executive Curators. Bruce's interest in electronics started with a Tektronix build-it-kit from Toys?R'Us. He went on to study Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. Since 1994, he has been with Analog Devices where he builds new circuits and device technology for high-speed automated test machines and for high-precision portable health care products.
Bruce is active with the Boston Section of the IEEE, the world's largest technical society and the professional home of engineers. Most recently, Bruce served as the Section's Chair (2010), leading a team of over 200 volunteers and a small local office staff in delivering professional education through chapter meetings, short courses and conferences. Currently, Bruce is working with the Section's pre-college education committee to expand programs and to get students excited about engineering. In this spring semester, Bruce will be teaching an after-school Citizen Schools apprenticeship in Solar Race Cars at the Salemwood School in Malden, Mass., together with colleagues from ADI and from Raytheon. As a result, his house is filled with car parts and robotic lego which makes for some interesting stories and fun with his kids: Elijah, Miriam, Leah, and his wife, Jodi.
