"Dell is the industry's low-cost producer," said Bruce Garelick, an analyst with Loomis Sayles.
Dell can keep pushing prices lower, say analysts, because its basic business model is the most efficient one around. While competitors such as Hewlett-Packard still rely heavily on third parties to sell their products, Dell does all its business directly. It builds machines to order and outsources virtually all parts of the operation. The end result: Dell can make money at prices the competition can't match.
