Morris came into the ninth inning trailing 4-2 and struggling to do much of anything against Streator ace Brooks Martin, but combined a trio of fluky hits, two perfectly-timed steal calls and a misplayed bad-hop chopper to shortstop for the game-winning rally.
With Morris two-hitter Kyle Janssen at the plate and runners at first and third, Martin
came set and delivered a 1-1 curveball.
"That pitcher for Streator
, pitched a heck of a game.
The strange bottom of the ninth -- in which the Muddogs had four hits, only one of which was of the conventional, hard-hit variety -- spoiled a great mound effort from Martin
and an all-around well-played game by the Patriots.Martin
threw a staggering 147 pitches (99 strikes), working 8 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on 11 hits, one walk and 18 strikeouts.
