Everybody knows Canon products, said Brian Strangways, director of business development for Canon Virginia Inc., a subsidiary of Canon.

In addition to providing imaging products, we're offering services to outside manufacturers in need of plastic injection molds," said Brian Strangways, Director of Business Development and Strategic Planning, Canon Virginia, Inc.
"It simply makes sense to leverage the quality Canon is known for in consumer products, to tooling for other manufacturers," he added. Contract manufacturing and reverse logistics services are also available through the company. According to Strangways, "Customers now have the ability to take advantage of Canon's core competency of high quality, efficient manufacturing for a full turnkey outsourcing solution, no matter how diverse their needs may be."

"We are hopeful that the mold sweepstakes has helped promote the molding industry," explains Brian Strangways, senior director, Business Development at Canon Virginia.

"Now we're allowed - actually requested - to go in other directions too," said Brian Strangways, director of the business development division for Canon Virginia."The mature, high-volume products went to low-cost countries," said Strangways.Canon Virginia was hired this year by 3-D Systems to mass-produce a desktop 3-D modeling machine."We've been doing it for 20 years, and it's been successful for both companies," said Strangways. The cartridges, not the printers, yield the profits. The cartridges are the heart of the machine, and require the most care to manufacture. That is why the production stayed in Newport News. One of the plant's first outside manufacturing clients moved production from China to Newport News because the necessary quality control and constant communication with engineers didn't work overseas. "Manufacturing in China is great if the product is simple," said Strangways."Logistically, it doesn't make sense to send that back overseas," said Strangways.

Brian Strangways, director of business development for Canon Virginia, says that as a subsidiary of Japan-based Canon, the Newport News manufacturing facility opened just over 20 years ago to support Canon's copier business in North America. That expanded into laser printers and toner cartridges. "With that background and expertise in developing and manufacturing products for the North American market, our strategy has evolved," explains Strangways.Strangways says that while many companies are outsourcing their manufacturing, Canon is focused on in-sourcing more activities."We're bringing more vertical operations in house to control the supply chain and the quality," Strangways says.Reverse logistics-bringing 3D Systems' products back for re-manufacture, handling returns, refurbishing equipment, and recycling products (which involves breaking them down and reusing certain valuable parts)-is one of Canon Virginia's strengths, explains Strangways.
