Public Indemnity – SWW protects the consumer - The Society of Will Writers

www.willwriters.com [cached]

Over the years in the absence of any formal statutory regulation for the Will writing profession, Brian McMillan, Director General for the Society of Will Writers has implemented a number of consumer safeguards and the SWW objectives mean that the team and its members continue to strive for better consumer protection.
As well as providing a robust complaints procedure, code of practice and entry requirements, Brian and the steering committee (The Executive Council) chaired by Nick Honeyman Brown introduced a Public Indemnity Fund designed to provide the consumer with assistance should the member they were dealing with go into liquidation, fall ill or sadly die.

Brian McMillan Profile
Brian McMillan Director General, The Society of Will Writers Brian was appointed as the Director General of The Society of Will Writers in June 1996 and has been working in the wills and probate industry for over 20 years. Before becoming a professional will writer he used to travel all over the world working for Chubb Fire and Security in a sales and compliance role. After joining the profession, Brian and his colleagues identified a need to create a membership organisation for will writers and so formed The Society of Will Writers in April 1994. Over two decades on, Brian as the Director General, has forged relationships and partnerships with a number of service organisations and has steered both the SWW and the profession onwards and upwards. The membership of the society has grown to around 2000 members. "Even as the largest independent organisation of its type we haven't forgotten our roots. We understand the need for effective communication and support and that is exactly what we strive to offer members", says Brian. Back in May 2013 the Lord Chancellor deemed it unnecessary to allow for the regulation of the profession. Following on from this, the SWW have worked tirelessly under instruction from Brian, in order to strengthen self-regulation. The amount of CPD required of members has increased and a dedicated training facility has been opened which Brian has called for, enabling the SWW to work towards educating the consumer. Brian's passion for the profession and the Society in particular has driven him for the past 20 years to ensure that the Society has been at the forefront of all events that have shaped the profession. Moving forward Brian would like to see some form of regulation although he doesn't believe in regulation for regulations sake.
