"We want to limit traffic down in that area so we can reduce as much as possible any threat to the sandbag dikes that are located there," Brandon emergency preparedness co-ordinator Brian Kayes explained Thursday morning.
Kayes said the province's updated forecast of a crest at 360.88 metres (1,184 feet) sometime in the middle of next week was just too risky.
"We have a concern, not about the dike that's in place on 17th Street East, but we have an awareness that the water could come over the railroad tracks and flood that piece out if it goes high enough," he said.
"We are confident that the dike that we have built will work," Kayes said.
