This year, the Baker Artist Awards
will be giving out a total of nine b-Grants. On November 7th, we announced the first three b-Grant recipients for 2012 - Miranda Pfeiffer, Brent Crothers
, and Tiffany Jones.
Brent Crothers and Anthropologie at Rockefeller
, one of this year's first nominees to receive a b Grant, is currently showing work in New York City at the Rockefeller Center. The one person show, entitled "Brent
Crothers: The Nature of Things", is in Anthropologie's gallery
at their main store in 50 Rockefeller Plaza and features 6 of the artists pieces. According to Brent, who had never heard of the popular clothing and home decor store Anthropologie
, the show has a funny story with regards to how it all came together...
After a meeting with the folks from Anthropologie
, the company arranged a studio visit with Brent
to see more of his
work. After two weeks of transforming his
studio, basement, and parts of his
house into a gallery space, Brent
showed three representatives from the store everything he
had to offer. "They wanted to see everything and asked lots of questions," he
said. "They asked if they could take photos as we toured through the different spaces, and a couple of hours later they were off for meetings at two of their stores in Maryland. The next day they sent me images of ten pieces they were interested in. I forwarded them a price list and within a week they purchased six pieces."
Things happened much quicker than anticipated, and Brent
's show at Rockefeller Center
opened this fall. Anthropologie contacted Brent at the end of September to say that his
show would be opening a week from then, on October 5th. It has been up since, and will be on display until next week, November 29th.
This years first round of b-Grant winners- Tiffany Jones, Brent Crothers
, and Miranda Pfeiffer - met with members of the William G. Baker
, Jr. Memorial Fund
at Joe Squared for a celebration dinner of pizza and drinks. It was a great opportunity to get to know the winners better, have some great conversation, and chow down!
