Brenda K. Hatfield
, 46, was charged Monday in Tippecanoe Circuit Court with 12 counts of forgery and one count of corrupt business influence -- all Class C felonies.
According to court documents filed Monday, investigators said Hatfield
, looking to get in on some property tax breaks, was facing a tight deadline in early 2010 to transfer some property, so she
forged signatures to get in under the wire.
The investigation began in March 2010, after some of Hatfield's tenants saw in the Journal & Courier
that they were listed as having purchased the rental properties they were occupying.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Hatfield
indicated that her
accountant told her she
could get tax exemptions by putting some of her
properties under land contracts.
The affidavit says Hatfield
tenants to get them under a contract and had the intention of meeting with them around November 2009 to get signatures.
According to the court document, one day before a Jan. 5, 2010, deadline Hatfield had her
assistants sign the documents that had not yet been signed by the tenants.
Lafayette attorney Kent Moore, with Laszynski & Moore Law Offices, is representing Hatfield.
"So far Brenda
has cooperated with the investigation, but beyond that, we don't have anything to say," Moore said.
Hatfield was formerly an independent contractor with Coldwell Banker Shook in Lafayette but was placed on administrative leave pending the result of the investigation.

Now their landlord, Lafayette-area Realtor Brenda Hatfield, is being investigated by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office and Lafayette Police Department for possible fraud.
is suspected of turning in sales disclosure forms that may have contained forged signatures, false information or both.
Meanwhile, Brenda Hatfield has been placed on administrative leave by Coldwell Banker Shook Agency, said Charlie Shook, the agency's president.
"Brenda is a salesperson with our company," Shook said.

Hatfield has worked at Shook Agency for six years, Shook said.
