Real estate broker Hatfield is charged | jconline.com | Journal and Courier Brenda K. Hatfield, 46, was charged Monday in Tippecanoe Circuit Court with 12 counts of forgery and one count of corrupt business influence -- all Class C felonies. According to court documents filed Monday, investigators said Hatfield, looking to get in on some property tax breaks, was facing a tight deadline in early 2010 to transfer some property, so she forged signatures to get in under the wire. The investigation began in March 2010, after some of Hatfield's tenants saw in the Journal & Courier that they were listed as having purchased the rental properties they were occupying. Related Charges against Brenda Hatfield According to the probable cause affidavit, Hatfield indicated that her accountant told her she could get tax exemptions by putting some of her properties under land contracts. The affidavit says Hatfield contacted her tenants to get them under a contract and had the intention of meeting with them around November 2009 to get signatures. According to the court document, one day before a Jan. 5, 2010, deadline Hatfield had her assistants sign the documents that had not yet been signed by the tenants. Lafayette attorney Kent Moore, with Laszynski & Moore Law Offices, is representing Hatfield. "So far Brenda has cooperated with the investigation, but beyond that, we don't have anything to say," Moore said. Hatfield was formerly an independent contractor with Coldwell Banker Shook in Lafayette but was placed on administrative leave pending the result of the investigation. Charges against Brenda Hatfield None of the properties involved were owned by Coldwell Banker Shook, but rather by Hatfield through a side business she owned. Brenda Hatfield Brenda Hatfield

Now their landlord, Lafayette-area Realtor Brenda Hatfield, is being investigated by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office and Lafayette Police Department for possible fraud.
Hatfield is suspected of turning in sales disclosure forms that may have contained forged signatures, false information or both. Meanwhile, Brenda Hatfield has been placed on administrative leave by Coldwell Banker Shook Agency, said Charlie Shook, the agency's president. "Brenda is a salesperson with our company," Shook said. "It came to my attention (Thursday) from her that she was under investigation for some private sales -- sales involving rental properties she owned. "I have been assured by her and the sheriff and by Lafayette police ... that none of these transactions were pieces of property sold to Shook Agency or buyers of ours." Attempts Friday to contact Hatfield were not successful. A message was left on her cell phone seeking comment. The same number went unanswered Friday afternoon. Hatfield has worked at Shook Agency for six years, Shook said. According to Journal & Courier archives, between Dec. 15 and Dec. 30, more than two dozen properties were sold in Tippecanoe County by Greg and Brenda Hatfield to the Mitchells and others.
