"A friend of mine called me and said they were looking for a high school math teacher in Sebastian," said Buchweitz."I had worked for (SRHS principal) Dr. Jones before and I thought it was time for a change."
Buchweitz grew up in Illinois and received her bachelor of science in junior high/middle school mathematics education from Illinois State University. She attended Nova Southeastern University, where she received her master's degree in specific learning disabilities.
"I always wanted to teach math," recalls Buchweitz."I had some excellent math teachers myself and they inspired me and pushed me in pursuing math as a career.I really enjoy teaching algebra because I think it's a building block for all of high school mathematics.I like to think of math as a giant puzzle and when the kids finally put all the pieces together, I know they really get it."

Comeback
...
For more than three months, Brenda Buchweitz has stayed at her husband's hospital bedside hoping that once again his eyes would engage hers, that his lips would speak her name.
A car accident left him in a deep coma, separating the two who had joined in a later-in-life marriage: the third for him, the second for her.
This one took after a no-frills marriage in St. Augustine. It boiled down to a simplicity: "We mesh," she recalled him saying, as she sat beside her unresponsive husband last year.
They used to laugh about the time their pet macaw bird told a robber to "come on in" to their home in Valkaria in southern Brevard County.
Then came Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Carlin Parker running down a hallway the afternoon of Sept. 27 as Mrs. Buchweitz worked after hours as an algebra teacher at Sebastian River High School.
She thought something had gone wrong at the school.
It hadn't.
The wrong happened two counties south on Interstate 95, near Stuart.
Buchweitz was driving home from West Palm Beach where he attended a training class he had to take to continue doing one of his favorite things: volunteering as an auxiliary patrolman. He did that 40 to 80 hours a month in addition to running a property management company he co-owns in southern Brevard County.
But even a trained officer probably couldn't comprehend what happened next on the interstate, an FHP official said.
Buchweitz's new Supersport Camaro was among hundreds of cars streaming north, on three lanes, when a Miami motorist pulled out of a north- bound rest stop, according to patrol accident reports.
Instead of going north, the 51-year-old motorist turned her 1994 Ford south into the oncoming traffic and rammed into the auxiliary officer's $20,000 car, causing it to roll over nine times and breaking one of the 41-year-old man's ribs, injuring his lung and shaking his brain, rattling it against the skull, plunging him into a deep coma.
...
As Brenda watched, the therapist asked Mark what is the name of his wife.
His lips said "Brenda".
Emotions overwhelmed her.Tears flooded her eyes.
All that happened before, the opening eyelids, eye movements and hand clasping hadn't acknowledged her.
The lips did.
