NEW BRITAIN - After more than 30 years in the city's educational system, Braulio Santiago, principal of the Smalley Academy, is retiring.

"It's difficult after you've been here for years - it's like you are leaving a family," said the 52-year-old Santiago, whose last day will be Dec. 21."I'm not leaving because I had to leave.I'm leaving because it was a great opportunity, and I could retire also.I'm going into something totally different."Beginning January, Santiago will become the executive director of education - equivalent to being superintendent of schools - for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which operates Foxwoods Resort Casino, said to be the world's largest resort casino. The position means overseeing the reservation's entire educational department, teaching people from birth to the grave, including programs for children in day care and even working with seniors.Doris Kurtz, the city's superintendent of schools, honored Santiago's work at Smalley Academy, crediting him with raising the bar in student test scores over the years and creating a strong and supportive school environment.
"We have been fortunate all of these years to have Braulio Santiago as an outstanding principal in our school district," Kraczkowsky said.
Santiago, one of three Hispanic principals in the elementary school system, has served as top administrator at the elementary school for more than 15 years, but his work in the city's school district stretches to three decades.Previously he worked as coordinator for a work-study program with The Hartford Insurance Group, helping urban students enter the work force. He has also been a Spanish teacher, elementary school teacher, a bilingual resource specialist and assistant principal at Smalley before a promotion in 1991.Santiago arrived at Smalley Elementary School in 1986.The school had a growing Hispanic population, and Santiago, one of the first Hispanic administrators in New Britain, had the advantage of being bilingual. Some had doubts about the young Santiago - he was 31 - but former principal Vincent Mercadante found him promising, saying "I think he will be a good asset in the promotion of good community relations."Five years later, when Santiago took the head position, he found it wasn't easy turning a school with a bad reputation into one of the highest-performing schools in the district."There were a lot of issues," Santiago recalled."It was one of the lowest-performing schools in the district. No one wanted to come to Smalley. But it turned around completely. Now we have students on a waiting list to come here."Santiago credits parents' involvement and the help of non-profit organizations for the school's success, but felt "Parents will remember me as someone who really worked hard in the community with the kids and turning the school around."Santiago was honored Oct. 11 in Hartford at the 12th Annual New England Conference on Multicultural Education for his work promoting diversity and equality in education."My main goal is to make sure diversity and multiculturalism is not just an 'add-on,' but an integral part of our conversation," he said.Santiago said his leaving comes at the right time, putting aside the sorrow he expressed Wednesday that districtwide changes, to be implemented as soon as next year, will change the Smalley curriculum he built."I always said I would want to leave when I know that what I've done has really been leaving a legacy," he said.Santiago hoped to do the same for the Mashantucket Pequots."I'm looking forward to taking them from where they are and taking them to the next level," Santiago said.
