Brandon Hawkins' mural represents Middletown's multicultural makeup.
Hot Topics Brandon Hawkins of Illzotic Design paints a mural on the side of the Middletown Community Center on Tuesday, July 21. Hawkins said the mural represents the diversity of the community. He hopes to have the mural completed soon. Artist Brandon Hawkins is painting a mural he calls "a multicultural playground" on the Lafayette Avenue building. It faces Ohio 4 and depicts four children of different ethnic backgrounds holding a glowing basketball - which he said represents having the world in their hands - with a rainbow in the background. "I think it will definitely bring some life to a building that was looking pretty drab before from what I've been told," said Hawkins, owner of Cincinnati business Illzotic Design.

Art and Living - The Magazine that Brings Art to Life Artist Profile: Brandon Hawkins Artist Profile: Brandon Hawkins Artist Brandon Hawkins, age 28, recalls drawing as a toddler-not on paper, but on walls. "I didn't talk much, so crayons spoke through me," he smiles. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Hawkins grew up in a household where creativity was cherished. His mother, a ballet dancer and a Black Panther, and his father, a chemical engineer at Procter & Gamble, inspired him to pursue painting. Heightened State of Black In his art, Hawkins' emotions melt, blending with the paint to illustrate his soul. Layers reveal details that come together to complete the story. Among his many notable works is Heightened State of Black, through which Hawkins admonishes his generation to achieve higher goals. A recently married, full-time student at University of Cincinnati, Hawkins is completing his B.A. in African American Studies while working two jobs, one of which is at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. He credits his success to his wife and business manager, Ewaniki Moore-Hawkins, as well as a higher power. "God has given me the gift of painting. I have to be a good steward," he concludes. Hawkins' works are available through the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. 513-333-7500 - www.freedomcentergiftshop.org Photos: (Top): Brandon Hawkins, Emancipation Detonation, 2005.
