Bradley J. VanSickle, MD, PhDFellow, Pediatric Endocrinology and DiabetesDr. VanSickle's current research focuses on elucidating the interaction between impaired glucose regulation and the progression of cystic fibrosis (CF).CF-related diabetes (CFRD) and other abnormalities of glucose tolerance have been recognized as important factors impacting long-term survival of CF patients.Patients with CFRD have increased mortality and decreased pulmonary function compared to those without diabetes.He is currently combining the expertise at Vanderbilt in the management of diabetes and the treatment of cystic fibrosis to develop new insights into the pathophysiology of these disease.He hopes to unravel how metabolism influences the immune response and how this can be controlled to promote an improved quality of life in patients with CF.

Dr. VanSickle has received research funding from the NIH and from the National Institutes on Drug Abuse.His research has been published in Neuropsychopharmacology and Neuropharmacology.

Bradley J. VanSickle, MD, PhD 3rd Year Fellow

Brad hails from the "Buckeye state," originally from Norton, Ohio. He graduated in 1996 from Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio with a B.S. degree in Neuroscience before entering the M.D./Ph.D. program at the Medical College of Ohio. His doctoral research investigated the role of brain excitatory glutamate receptors in the expression of drug-withdrawal behaviors after chronic use of benzodiazepines. He completed his residency training in Pediatrics at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. His current research interest focuses on the management of Cystic Fibrosis-related diabetes.
He is married to wife Kathy, a speech-language pathologist, and they have two children, Paige and Sam. Brad enjoys spending time with his family, as well as playing soccer and reading Tom Clancy novels.
