Brad Peek, owner of the Shasta Livestock Auction Yard, said cattle prices skyrocketed because of a drought last year that caused many ranchers to disperse their herds or slaughter cows they couldn't feed, which creates a boom in demand.
"More cows are going to slaughter, so there's less calves being born over time," he said.
Prices also rose because more beef is being exported, he said.
But ironically, Peek said, cattle prices have gone back down about 15 percent in the past six weeks or so, right around the time the county's crop and livestock report was released.
That's likely because of another drought in the Midwest, he said, which is causing ranchers to quickly sell their cattle.
"A lot of cattle are coming to market right away," he said.
