UMass professor Bodo Reinisch co-founded UMass Lowell's Center for Atmospheric Research.Reinisch said solar storms are often unpredictable.
"To really predict when it occurs -- we don't know," Reinisch said.
Reinisch said scienfific effects of a solar storm include a mass loss in the plasmasphere.
"We're trying to understand where that mass disappears to," Reinisch said.
