NEW ZION -- Robert B. "Bob" Gibbons Jr. of New Zion has announced his
candidacy for the S.C. Senate District 36 seat.
District 36 includes all of Clarendon and Calhoun counties as well as portions of Sumter and Florence counties.Gibbons
, a Republican, is running against incumbent Senate Democratic Leader John Land of Manning.Gibbons retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1989 after serving for 23 years.He was a decorated veteran in the Air Force and earned a business degree in 1986 from Victor Valley College in California.He
returned to South Carolina in 1987.Gibbons is a life member of The American Legion, Air Force Association, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars.He is also a member of Black River American Legion Post No. 149, Master Mason of Fidelity Lodge No. 394 and Correspondent of La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux (40/8) -- Sumter Voiture 1254.
"No matter where I have been stationed, South Carolina has always been home," he
said."Now it is time for me to give back to the community which has supported me."
In 1995, Gibbons
completed Palmetto Leadership Clarendon County course.He is chairman of the Clarendon County Planning and Public Service Commission, and chairman of the Clarendon County Republican Party.Gibbons has served in leadership positions around the globe and said that he would like to continue such leadership here at home.
"I have witnessed many forms of government and I am looking forward to continue working within our own," he
said."My goal is to bring efficient management to government programs and ensure the citizens of South Carolina are getting their money's worth."Gibbons
is married to Jean Claire Kennedy Burttram of New Zion, a retired Clarendon County School District 2 teacher.
