Robert S. ("Bob") Ward receives honorary doctorate degree from University of Massachusetts Lowell
Robert S. Ward, Ph.D.
Bob Ward, a chemical engineer and well-known expert in biomedical polymer science, is Chairman of Emergence Venture Partners LLC, President and CEO of ExThera Medical, and the former President and Chief Executive of DSM Biomedical in Berkeley, California, a biomaterials and medical device company he founded in 1989 (Polymer Technology Group, "PTG").
Bob has 40 years of experience in the development and manufacturing of Class III medical devices, and R&D/manufacturing of novel biomaterials for critical applications.
Materials and components developed and manufactured under his
direction have been used in hundreds of devices and prosthetic implants. -
is a frequent contributor to the technical literature and the inventor of many widely used biomaterials and surface modification technologies.
In 2003 he
was awarded the "Technology Innovation and Development Award" from the Society for Biomaterials
In 2004he was named one of MD&DI's "100 Most Notable People" in the medical device industry.
In 2006 he
received the "Excellence in Surface Science Award" from The Surfaces in Biomaterials Foundation
In 2012 he was awarded an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts.
Earlier in his career, he worked for seven years for Avco Medical Products, and 10 years for Thoratec before founding PTG.
Bob studied engineering management and polymer science at Northeastern University and he has a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Massachusetts and a Doctorate in Humane Letters from the University of Massachusetts.
