Bob Townley, Founder and Executive Director

Bob's broad experience in nonprofit management is bolstered by a Master's degree in Social Administration from Columbia University. He has worked extensively with families in New York City, including homeless families at the Henry Street Settlement's Urban Family Center. His commitment to helping families secure employment and childcare has been the driving force in his work. Bob's other love is sports and recreation. In the mid-1980s he became Youth Coordinator of Community Board One, and he started Manhattan Youth in 1986 with Lower Manhattan parents. His commitment to social activism helped him organize community meetings and services for residents including successful advocacy efforts for parks, sports leagues and schools. In the aftermath of 9/11 Bob took the lead in organizing services for the downtown community.
Bob ranks as one of the longest-serving members of CB1. He is a member of the Hudson River Park Advisory Board, the Residents Advisory Board of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and he is a founder of the Downtown Soccer and Little Leagues. A native of Coney Island who grew up in Manhattan and Queens, he has lived in Tribeca and has been a Battery Park City resident for the past 15 years. Bob enjoys hiking, music about beaches and the ocean, he loves the gym in his building, and he is a die-hard fan of both the New York Giants and New York Jets!

Bob Townley - the founder ... [cached]

Bob Townley - the founder and executive director of Manhattan Youth, who also serves on CB1, where he has long called for a greater emphasis on traffic and pedestrian safety - said, "they can call West Street a 'street' all they want, but it's really an eight-lane highway. And that intersection is the equivalent of a highway off ramp."

He also noted that, "CB1's task force was instrumental is getting fences put on the north side of Chambers to stop pedestrians from crossing there.
"What we really need there," Mr. Townley continued, "is a dedicated turning lane from West, with its own light, indicating that every other user of that intersection - meaning pedestrians and cyclists West Street, as well as drivers on Chambers Street - have all come to a stop.
Mr. Townley gives a perfect solution for making the intersection of Chambers and West St. safer. I cycle through that intersection at least twice a day.

Community Boards seek new members [cached]

Bob Townley, director of Manhattan Youth and of the Downtown Community Center at 120 Warren Street, has served on C.B. 1 for around 20 years. He became chairman of the Waterfront Committee two years ago.

Townley said he decided to serve on the Community Board because, "As director of Manhattan Youth and as a resident, community affairs are critical for me." He noted that he had spent a lot of his graduate education at Columbia University studying community organizing and planning and added, "I was always interested in local control of resources in a world where decisions are being removed from local people."
Townley considers the Community Board's impact on Lower Manhattan Development Corporation funding, new school openings and work with New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver's office to have been among the Community Board's most significant accomplishments of the past two years. In addition, he said, "Part of my personal pleasure comes from the friends I have made from being on the Community Board."
