Businesses come to terms with war possibility, 1 Oct 2002 [cached]
Bob Pinzler, a business consultant and board member of the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce, questioned the need for war.He said the Iraq issue resembles the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964, when the United States staged a confrontation to justify entering the Vietnam War.
He said he hasn't seen any clear link between Iraq and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"There isn't enough information, or cogent information, to make people realize that this is what we need to do," Pinzler said."There needs to be much more clear and present danger to the United States. . . . We have to look at this not just as doing something now, but looking down the road, trying to reduce the unintended consequences."
He questioned why President Bush was focusing so much on Iraq instead of North Korea, which also has a dismal human rights record and possible weapons of mass destruction.
Pervaiz Lodhie, president of Torrance-based Ledtronics, also questioned what he called a rush to war.
"The economy in the United States has gone down for the past two years," Lodhie said."Actions that are now being taken by the president and his administration are going to make it worse."
Lodhie said the timing for a war is terrible. He said the U.S. economy has suffered three heart attacks: the dot-com bust, Sept. 11 and the corporate scandals.A war would constitute another heart attack, he said.
