- 83, of Fort Dodge, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at Trinity Regional Medical Center
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 2nd at Corpus Christi Church
with Rev. Lynn Bruch officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial.Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1856.Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home
.Bob is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara; a son, Bennett and his wife Diane of Fort Dodge; two daughters, Mary Beth Frischmeyer and her husband Michael of Fort Dodge and Becky Fideler and her husband Dr. Brad of Lake Geneva, WI; grandchildren, Cara and Erin O'Connor, Kate, Elizabeth, and Emily Fideler, Connor and Meggie Frischmeyer.
...Robert J. O'Connor was born August 21, 1925 in Fort Dodge, Iowa.He attended Corpus Christi Academy and at the age of 16 he graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1942.He attended the local Community College for one year and a University of Iowa summer session before enlisting in the army in the fall of 1943.
Assigned to the 86th (Black Hawk) Division, he
received training in California and Louisiana before going overseas in February 1945.His
unit was moving toward Berchesgarten with an objective of capturing Hitler's Eagles Nest when on April 29, 1945, only 10 days before V-E Day, O'Connor
was wounded by shrapnel.After treatment in an England hospital, he
was sent to O'Reilly General Hospital
in Springfield, Missouri, and later discharged September 23, 1945.He then re-enrolled at the University of Iowa, earning a bachelor's degree in commerce in 1947.Robert
started his career in the insurance industry almost the day after graduating from college in 1947, joining his father John O'Connor.
purchased half of the agency at that time.After John passed away in 1960, Robert became the sole owner of the agency.
...Bob has been active in the organization on a local and state level, several times serving as a state committee member.
In 1988 he
sold the agency to Bennett his
only son.Robert was a past member and officer of the Corpus Christi parish council, serving as head of the finance committee.He has also been a member of the Elks Club and Kiwanis Club, past board member of VFW and American Legion serving as adjutant for several years.
For over 58 years, he
has made the necessary arrangements for Fort Dodge Senior High
and St. Edmond High School juniors to participate in the week-long program known as Boys State, held annually at Camp Dodge in Des Moines.
