"His father was involved with (the fire company) to a point where he was dedicated and that's what was passed on to him," Christiansburg Fire Chief Bob Hoey said about Harold Zerkle.
Hoey said information found by the fire company showed Harold Zerkle had a 91 percent attendance rate to fire meetings over an 18 year period. Hoey said as a private fire company, the department is run as a business and Zerkle has served on the company's auditing committee for a number of years.

Before the days of automatic doors, "we always had trouble with our overhead doors," said Bob Hoey, the current Christiansburg chief. "We used to pull them up," then as a truck was being pulled out "they would go back down, then you'd hear the crunch of the door taking out the firetruck's lights," Hoey said.

Christiansburg Fire Chief Bob Hoey said the Christiansburg Fire Department received a call around 10:30 a.m. reporting a structure fire at 2258 S. Elm Tree Road.
Upon firefighters' arrival, Hoey said, flames and heavy smoke were exiting almost every window on the first floor of the residence. Hoey said two adult dogs and three puppies perished in the fire. No other injuries were reported. No people were in the house at the time of the fire. The residents also had animals outside the residence. Hoey said the residence was a total loss. He did not have an exact damage estimate. While the cause of the fire is under investigation, Hoey asked people not to leave space heaters unattended and to use them safely around this time of year.
