GREENSBORO, N.C. - Bob Fraley, the chair of USATF men's pole vault development and Director of Track & Field at Fresno State University, has been named USA Track & Field's 2003 Nike Coach of the Year.Fraley will receive the award Friday, December 5, at Jesse Owens Awards Dinner and Xerox Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held at USATF's 2003 Annual Meeting in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Fraley played a pivotal role in rejuvenating the pole vault in the United States when in 1989 he created the Pole Vault Summit, now held in Reno, Nevada.Featuring competitions and an exchange of knowledge about pole vaulting, the event attracts more than 2,000 male and female athletes, from teen-agers to Olympic gold medalists.His work has reaped dividends: in the last three years alone, Team USA men's pole vaulters have won the gold and silver medals at both the 2000 Olympic Games and 2001 IAAF World Indoor Championships, as well as the bronze medal at the 2001 World Outdoor Championships.
In 2003, his contributions reached a new level when he donated his salary to the school's men's track program in order to prevent it from being cut due to budgetary reasons.
"I feel very honored, but I'm more shocked than anything," Fraley said."This honor is huge and I'm just very thankful to be selected.USA Track & Field has always been supportive of my activities to try to improve the sport and they've given me a platform to do a lot of things.We have to get out and sell the sport, and USA Track & Field has done a really good job of giving me the opportunity to get out and do those things."
A graduate of Fresno State, Fraley has coached 37 NCAA All- Americans at his alma mater.He coached three individual NCAA titles, all of which were by his son, Doug, in the pole vault.In addition, Fraley has coached 64 league titlists, and has been named the Region 8 head indoor coach of the year five times.

Bob Fraley began his coaching career at Fresno State in 1980.Coach Fraley has led 41 athletes to All-American status, including his son Doug, who was a 3 time NCAA champion.He has been named the Region 8 Indoor Coach of the Year five times and served as the President of the Division I Track Coaches Association, as well as serve as chairman for pole vault development in the United States.Being well-known for his expertise in the Pole Vault, he was elected the President of the North American Pole Vault Association, where he is requested across the country for his consultation in this event.Bob Fraley's charismatic approach to getting the life back into track has proven very successful by the sell out event of the Pole Vault Summit, held in Reno each year.Bob Fraley has elevated the sport of track and field to a new heights and with his enthusiasm for the sport, he continues to motivate and inspire athletes around the country.Bob and his wife Elaine, married 42 years, have three children, Tammy, Jill and Doug.
Bob and Elaine have made a great team over the years in the revival of track and field.

Bob Fraley, founder of the North American Pole Vault Association, hosted the first meet to include women.
"It started in California, with some high school girls going and working out with the boys," said Fraley, a former Fresno State coach.
"They have an ability to establish an emotional connection with the fans," Fraley said.
