Why Bill Withers decided to sell his company to his workers Why Bill Withers decided to sell his company to his workers Published 10 April 2015 11:56, Updated 10 April 2015 14:59 Tweet +font -font print Email page Why Bill Withers decided to sell his company to his workers Bill Withers wants employees to have ownership in his businesses. Former software engineer Bill Withers started an employee ownership scheme for his company, acQuire Technology Solutions, in 2008 with co-founder Andrew Shoemack, a mining engineer. "We have a strategy of accelerating that in the next 18 months to two years," says Withers. Now 54, his intention is to sell out of the company to employees by the time he is 60. AcQuire is the "economic engine" that allowed Withers to launch ADAPT by Design two years ago. Looking at his customers and other companies, Withers said externalising their share capital (by bringing in investors or floating the company) means they are restricted in their ability to plan long term. "We have never retrenched anybody for economic reasons," says Withers. Then there is the succession issue, Withers says. Build your own: Withers wasn't keen on the existing employee-ownership models he found, so he decided to come up with his own. Keeping people: The average tenure of the board of 11 is 11.8 years each. Out of 120 staff, 87 have been with the company longer than three years and 61 longer than five years. Trust: By selecting employees with high levels of personal responsibility, the company is able to have less "policy policing". "If you build organisations on the principle of a low opinion of people, you build lots of rules and then you put in policing systems to check those rules," says Withers.
