Thursday afternoon, Wetterstrom met with the fifth-graders in his band's percussion section and a sole guitar player.
During the first half of the year, Wetterstrom said, he met with students in other teachers' classrooms and in the cafeteria, dragging his music stands and carts of books from room to room.
In the cafeteria, music stands had to be stacked daily and his students practiced amid the distraction of cafeteria personnel washing pots and pans.
Now, each class comes to his room for a half-hour every week, and each of the 80 band members is pulled once a week from P.E. class for practice, section by section.
Wetterstrom and other district music teachers described their wish lists to the board of trustees at a recent meeting.
"The acute need is in the feeder schools," said Butch Peterson, music instructor at Orland High School.
Having a kindergarten-through-eighth-grade music environment is crucial to having a successful music program in high school, he said.
Wetterstrom said he offers the extra instruction four days a week, but some students aren't able to take advantage of the time because they already have after-school commitments or have to ride a bus home.
