Chancellor Mr Bill Scales is committed to education as a lifelong journey. After completing a five-year fitter and machinist apprenticeship, Bill went on to complete an economics degree from Monash University 15 years later.
He believes that having the opportunity to continue learning by returning to study part-time enabled him to fulfil a dream that would not otherwise have been available.
Acknowledged as one of the nation's most powerful and influential public policy reformers, Bill has held a number of high-profile leadership roles in both the public and private sectors.
As Chancellor of Swinburne, Bill provides strong support to the Vice-Chancellor and is also Chair of the university Council.
Bill believes that Swinburne's ongoing investment in research and scholarship makes it an ideal environment for academics and students. Bill is currently serving on the following organisations and Boards:

Bill Scales
Bill Scales is Chancellor of Swinburne University of Technology, a Member of the Veolia Australia- New Zealand Advisory Board and President of the Business Higher Education Roundtable. Bill was appointed by the Australian Government in June of this year as a Member of the Civil Society 20 (C20) Steering Group to contribute to Australia's G20 presidency in 2014. He is also a Member of the Australian Governments New Colombo Plan Reference Group.
Bill has served as Chairman of the Port of Melbourne Corporation, Chairman of the Australian Safety and Compensation Council, a Board Member of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, and a Director of Commander Communications.
In 1993, Bill was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for his services to industry and in 2003 he was awarded the Centenary Medal for outstanding service to Business and Commerce.
