Owen said the motivation of the people who vote in the runoff is often different from those who vote in the primary, when there was a field of four candidates.
"It's a whole new race - it's a different kind of race," Owen said.
"The primary is as much a beauty contest as anything else, and I might not be the most beautiful candidate," he said with a laugh.

Bill Owen is president of Asset and Equity Corporation, Member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), and political analyst and commentator, known nationally for his ideas on government policy. Bill is a former Member of the Tennessee State Senate and Tennessee House of Representatives.
Bill uses Southern humor and satire with just a sprinkle of "Tennessee Hillbilly" to enlighten us on ways to be the change in your own community as well as understanding politics at a deeper level nationally and globally.
His global passion extends into being CEO of World Mara International Foundation, a Kenyan environmental non-profit to benefit the Maasai tribe, organized in Tennessee.
Editors Note: One of my fondest memories of Senator Bill Owen was when I served as an intern in the Tennessee State General Assembly. At the time my father was the Senate Majority Leader of the State of Tennessee and a close friend and colleague of Senator Owen. As an intern, I learned the importance of gaining as much experience in the field as possible while making valuable contacts with leaders there. My experience was greatly enhanced by my work with Senator Owen and his office-learning valuable lessons of the importance of working together, working bipartisan, and more importantly working to make that big difference that hopefully all our public officials try to do. We all have early mentors and inspirational figures in our lives who have helped direct us to be the change we wish to be and truly are in the world. I am proud to have Senator Bill Owen as my friend and honored to now have him play a role in our publication Be Magazine.
When Bill learned about Be Magazine, he was inspired to create his own campaign for change, "Be for Knoxville" through a print newsletter. We're thrilled to continue to inspire through Be Magazine and Gandhi's vision statement "Be the Change You Wish to See in the World" which inspires us all.
Today, I reflect on my days as a young legislative intern, running behind the great minds and leaders of Tennessee politics in the 1980s and finding a great sense of honor to re-connect with my friend and former mentor, Senator Bill Owen. Be Magazine looks forward to sharing his stories as well as his insights. We are also very inspired and looking forward to exploring his work in Africa, as he literally takes his work and vision globally. This is truly a celebration for me to share his messages with our readers as we again realize our possibilities to truly move forward and continue to make that difference in the world wherever we are. Be Blessed….
