Winnipeg's music community is rallying behind one of its own, veteran bass player Bill Merritt, who is fighting a cancerous brain tumour.
Merritt is best known for playing in many prominent Winnipeg rock bands, including Mood Jga Jga, in the '60s and '70s, as well as serving as general manager of the Winnipeg Folk Festival from its inception until the late '80s. He was also a co-founder of the Winnipeg International Children's Festival.
Since his diagnosis, Merritt's wife, Luci, has had to stop working to provide full-time care for him. To help with living costs while Merritt undergoes chemotherapy treatments, friends Gord Osland, Drew Cringan, Marv Terhoch, Tom Jackson, Bob Sparrow (owner of the Norwood Hotel) and Merritt's pals at the Winnipeg Folk Festival have organized Bitter Pill: The Benefit Concert for Bill Merritt, on Jan. 14 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. Incredibly, Merritt was able to pull through a similar experience 17 years ago when he was diagnosed with cancer. At the time, he was told by doctors he had five years to live. Remarkably, he beat the odds. Friends are hoping that he'll be able to make a similar recovery.
"It was like a miracle," says Al Simmons, co-host of the event and a long-time friend of Merritt's.

Osland hopes the event will raise $30,000 for Merritt and his wife.
