As the track announcer at Beulah Park in Grove City, Ohio, Bill Downes is accustomed to calling races accurately.Recently, however, Downes has proven that he is more than adept at calling races without the benefit of having seen them first.Last weekend in Iowa, Downes finished second of 100 participants in the Prarie Meadows Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship Qualifying Tournament. For Downes, the placing meant $2,000 and a free trip to Las Vegas for the seventh annual $500,000 DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship at Bally's next January.Downes also qualified for the National Handicapping Championship, now the focus of an ESPN special, two years ago.
"Every year the National Handicapping Championship gets bigger," said Downes, who was making his first ever trip to Prairie Meadows.
It was also a qualifying day last Saturday at Delaware Park in Stanton where Michael Mazzio of Wilmington, Del., and Greg Knepper of West Lawn, Pa., topped a 433-person field and won the right to do battle against Downes and some 200 others at the National Handicapping Championship, which carries a first prize of $225,000.

Downes will make his debut at the Henderson, Kentucky, racetrack on August 6.
"Bill is an incredible announcer and we are very pleased to bring such an up and coming young talent to Ellis Park," Ellis Park owner Ron Geary said.
