"Five of these are Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) which is a complex and rare procedure," the Karen Hospital Chief Executive Officer Betty Gikonyo said.
She said the hospital has set up a fully fledged resident cardiac team in a bid to tackle the limited number of doctors available to perform heart surgeries in Kenya. "Given the foregoing dynamics, some patients have lost their lives while waiting for their turn to be attended to in various local facilities," Gikonyo said. "Our commitment is to provide advanced 360-degree solutions for heart patients and ensure traffic by patients throughout Africa is directed to Kenya, ultimately leading to an attraction of foreign exchange," Gikonyo said during a press conference at the hospital on Tuesday.
