Betty L. Aaron
Betty L. Aaron Betty Lou (Long) Aaron, 79, of Guymon went home to meet the Lord on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at the Memorial Hospital of Texas County in Guymon. The daughter of Lewis W. and Sylvia Marie (Gowens) Long, she was born May 5, 1932 at the farm home of her grandparents, south of Plains, Kansas. Betty was raised on the family farm, located in the Eva community. This was during WWII, and there were no available young men to hire for the farm work. She became the right hand man with her father and learned all the skills. She would drive the truck full of grain and deliver it to the elevator. Her favorite job was working with the cattle. Betty went to grade school in a one room country schoolhouse named White Hall in the Eva community. On May 31, 1947 the family moved to Keyes, Oklahoma to operate the Long Theatre which her dad had built. The entire family was needed to do the work. From the beginning it was agreed that rather than pay Betty a salary, she was given the popcorn concession. Her dad built the 54 Drive-In Theatre in 1948. Her parents moved to Guymon and left Betty to manage the Long Theatre. Betty attended school in Keyes, graduating as Salutatorian of her graduating class in May 1950. She enrolled at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, majoring in accounting. Her advisor told her that accounting was not a good major for women. During her last year she became discouraged and changed her major to marketing, receiving a B.S. degree in business administration in May 1954. After graduation, Betty knew that she needed to return home and become the manager of the Long Theatre. Betty was hired by an attorney, who was also a public accountant, where she did accounting work for several of his clients. Her boss encouraged her to return to school and complete her accounting degree. Betty received a student loan and entered school at the University of Wyoming. It had been thirteen years since she had taken accounting courses at O.S.U., so she took all the required courses as well as repeating some of the others. She received her B.S. degree in accounting in May of 1976. After two weeks, her application was accepted working as a revenue agent with the Internal Revenue Service. After working for one year, she had to return to Denver for advanced continued training on auditing partnerships, corporations and fiduciary returns. She was nominated to be the training officer, helping new agents who were just beginning. She was given several promotions. While living in Cheyenne, she began helping with a Little League boy’s baseball team. She also became a leader for a junior level Girl Scout troop and moved on to work as leader for the Cadet Group. Betty’s father passed away on April 16, 1973. Betty spent two years trying to get transferred to a post of duty closer to Guymon. She had to make the decision to resign her job and move back to Guymon to watch over the farm, Long Theatre and the 54 Drive-In. She opened her own accounting firm, Panhandle Bookkeeping Services, with an office in Guymon, one in Keyes and during tax season she would go to Elkhart, Kansas. Each year she had to attend an income tax seminar and she also took correspondence courses on various tax laws. After twenty-one years, she sold the firm to John Garrison, CPA on November 30, 1996. John then hired Betty to work during tax season, where she worked for twelve years. Then John sold his firm and Betty worked with Calvin Weissinger, CPA for two years. Betty retired following the tax season of 2008. Betty was married to Kenneth Eugene Aaron on October 14, 1982 and they were married until 1991. Betty was a member of Living Word Fellowship Church, where she rededicated her life to the Lord and was baptized in the Holy Spirit. She sang with the Praise and Worship team and was a member of a group of laymen who went to Fort Supply Prison. Betty joined a chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she served as the treasurer for ten years. This inspired her to finish her genealogy research of the Long family. When her niece, Kristi, joined Kid’s Inc., Betty began coaching 9 to 12 year old girls, which she did for approximately twelve years. She then operated the concession stand for another two years. Betty enjoyed all kinds of crafts and sports. She was also a member of the MHTC Ladies Auxiliary. Betty’s health began to fail in 2008 and with recovery slow, she moved to the Dunaway Manor in February 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Silva Long.
