According to the ALS Association, the disease usually affects white men between the ages of 40 and 70, and there is usually no family history of it.
Life expectancy is two to five years from the time of diagnosis.
If there were more media attention on ALS there would be a better chance to get research funding and increase awareness of the "horrible disease," Winget said.
Winget's brother-in-law died of ALS last year.
