RIDGEWOOD - Memorial Day may seem far off to some, but not to Beth Moras, the vivacious new Fred d'Elia Ridgewood Run director who mailed out 7,200 applications for this year's event to past participants and other area runners earlier this week.Moras, who has been working on the event since she was elected race director last late year, said the number of participants will be capped at 4,000, including the Fun Run.The 45-year-old mother of three, who has been the recipient of the Frank Lorey Female Best Marathon Award of the North Jersey Masters Track and Field Club the past two years, calls the event "a celebratory holiday tradition."The club sponsors the race, and its volunteers carry out the many details needed to make it a success each year.Coming up will be the 29th annual run."It's a wonderful platform that exposes every age group to running," said Moras."It's a race for everyone. The focus is to make the race a community event, emphasizing the Memorial Day tradition of bringing the community together as a whole."Moras said that the armed forces would be honored at the events, and she was also excited about the official race shirt, which she says is "solar powered"."The design changes color when exposed to sunlight," she said."Even on a cloudy day!"And, just as important as the competition of world-class runners in the 5K, 10K and mile races is the new Principal's Cup running program created for the Ridgewood School District.Moras said the running program will prepare middle and elementary school children to run in the 5K or Pun Run, and each child will receive an award certificate upon completion of the program. The Principal's Cup is sponsored by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield.
