Bernt Aasen Regional Director for Latin America and Caribbean, UNICEF Mr. Bernt Aasen was appointed UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and Caribbean in August 2009. Amongst his responsibilities for the Region, Mr Aasen leads UNICEF's involvement with the International Olympic Committee and the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to support children's rights to play, to mobilise communities and deliver important messages. Currently, his focus is the 2016 Olympics and 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Prior to this assignment, Mr. Aasen served as Director and Chief of Staff, in New York. In this capacity, he managed the Office of the Executive Director and provided advice on policy and management issues to the Executive Director and Deputy Executive Directors. In his time at UNICEF he has also served as Senior Advisor/Deputy Director a.i. in the Office of Emergency Programmes and as Director in charge of UN coherence issues. He also led the preparation of Joint UN Programmes supporting the Afghan National Development Strategy as UNICEF Representative in Afghanistan from 2004 to 2006.

Bernt Aasen Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, UNICEF Bernt Aasen heads UNICEF's Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean. The regional office supports 24 countries with facing very different challenges but with one common denominator: disparities. Following the Millennium Development Goals there are six areas in which the office centers its work: economic disparities; the social exclusion of millions of indigenous, afro descendents and children living with disabilities; violence within the family and in the communities; HIV/AIDS; chronic malnutrition and emergencies. Born in Norway, Aasen was UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan from 2002 to 2004. Aasen also has ample experience with UNICEF in Latin America and the Caribbean.

On the first week of October the UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and Caribbean, Bernt Aasen, visited Suriname for the first time to support the mission of the United Nations and UNICEF in the country. During his visit, Aasen met the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defense, Lamure Latour, as the coordinating ministry for the work of the United Nations in Suriname. The meeting was an opportunity to talk about UNICEF's support to the Government in achieving the Millennium Development Goals with equity. Aasen took this opportunity to follow up on the country's commitment to report on the Convention on the Rights of the Child Committee, regarding Suriname's pending submission of the combined third and fourth reports.
