On August 5, 2013, these three characteristics were put to the test by long-time Little League volunteer, Bernie Kozen, Pennsylvania District 29 Administrator, when he helped subdue the perpetrator during a shooting at the Ross Township Municipal Building. Mr. Kozen's selfless actions saved many lives, and for that Little League International recognized Mr. Cozen with the Character, Courage and Loyalty Award at the 26th Little League International Congress in Minneapolis, Minn., on April 5.
"Little League volunteers around the world are known for their dedication and loyalty, and Mr. Kozen's actions on that August day were nothing short of heroic," said Stephen D. Keener.

Mr. Kozen, also the Executive Director of the West End Park and Open Space Commission, was attending a meeting at the Ross Township Municipal Building when shots rang out, claiming the lives of three people.

"Mr. Kozen showed that the Little League tenants of Character, Courage and Loyalty know no bounds when he put his life on the line, saving many lives during a shooting in Ross Township in August 2013," said Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett in a video message.

"While we lost great Pennsylvanians in the tragedy, including Little League's own, David Fleetwood, Mr. Kozen's bravery and action, in the face of such adversity, make me proud to congratulate him on receiving Little League's Character, Courage and Loyalty Award."

Mr. Kozen first became a Little League volunteer when he signed up to coach his son's team in 1984 with Pocono Mountain Little League. He continued to volunteer at the local level, and has been the Administrator for Pennsylvania District 29 for the past 18 years.

Bernie Kozen, executive director of West End Park and Open Space Commission, said he has sold 2,800 signs and Supervisor Fleetwood said he know's Argot's True Value Hardware Store has sold several and continues to sell them.
Resident Clark stated that he was again going on record as saying he thought that residents should not be penalized for not putting up 9-1-1 number signs that there might be people who could not afford it.

Supervisor Dave Fleetwood asked Kozen if he has seen anything CJER can do to pick up where Monroe County's parks program left off since it has been done away with.

Bernie Kozen, Executive Director of West End Park and Open Space Commission reported that the Sled Riding Day, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 19, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Intermediate School was still on, as long as there was snow. There will be a Tai Chi demonstration at the park building on Saturday, March 12.
Kozen said Rita Lacey of Close the Loop asked for permission to hold a Give and Take Day on April 9, 2011 at the Chestnuthill Township Park.
