Bernice Jenkins, mayor of Bancroft, said their costs have been higher than most - in the top 16 across the province.
The town's billing estimate for this year is $1.581 million for just under 2,000 homes.
is happy with the level of service the Bancroft
OPP detachment provides.
"It is about the cost and our capacity to pay," she
"One thing, that needs to be said upfront, is as I look at the average cost of policing across the province, the cost of OPP policing is considerably less than the cost of having your own municipal policing."
said when it comes to discussing policing, there are two main points that need to be addressed.
says, is the new billing proposal.
"Using the example of your fire department and whether you ever have a fire or not, you still pay the cost of your fire department...
The council of the town of Bancroft
, and I would suggest all of the residents, supports the new billing proposal."
says while Bancroft
supports the new billing system, she
is aware it is very likely to put others in a different situation.
The second point, she
says, is the actual cost of policing.
"I believe there will be a look - a serious look - at any opportunities for efficiencies or how things could be done in a different way," she
"That's the second piece, it has not been addressed yet but it must be addressed."
Across the province, Jenkins
said, there needs to be a way for all municipalities to afford the service.
"We have, as a council, passed a resolution and sent it forward - we believe the new proposal will go forward - when that happens, there will be mitigation funding for those communities that will see an increase in their cost," she
